The painting „Tango is a sad thought that one can dance“ portrays an abstract bandoneon player. In his thoughts, a couple appears, dancing the tango — a vision filled with melancholy and longing. The scene could easily accompany Astor Piazzolla’s Vuelvo al Sur, a piece that carries the same emotional depth and quiet intensity.

The title comes from a famous quote by Enrique Santos Discépolo: “Tango is a sad thought that one can dance.” It captures the essence of tango as a music of contradictions — sorrow intertwined with movement, grief transformed into beauty, and emotion expressed through the body. Tango mourns and celebrates at the same time, allowing dancers to embody feelings that words cannot hold.

Astor Piazzolla, the legendary Argentine bandoneon player and composer, revolutionized the genre and is considered the founder of Tango Nuevo. Although his works were originally written for bandoneon and orchestra, many of them have become beloved pieces in the classical guitar repertoire — and he remains one of my favorite composers.
